A career for people with taste.
The three factors that decide the quality of a tea are its taste, aroma and the colour of the “cup”. These factors vary depending on the country of origin, the growing area, the location of the plantation, the soil, how the leaves are processed and even the day of the harvest.
Teas from neighbouring estates, or even teas from the same estate picked just a few days apart, can be very different. As a result, tea drinkers can choose between an extremely large number of different varieties. The job of the tea taster is to select the best from this immense pool.
The tea taster’s most important asset is a highly refined sense of taste. A tea taster examines as many as 500 tea samples per day during the main harvest and purchasing period from April to the end of August. The actual tasting only takes a few seconds, and the taster then knows if a tea is a good match for a specific blend.
Tea tasters also work at tea auctions so that they can determine the quality of a harvest and negotiate a price on that basis. In this, the tea taster’s expertise is the only thing that ensures wise purchasing decisions and the consistent quality of a specific tea brand. In addition to a fine sense of taste and smell, the profession also requires a great deal of experience. By the way, over 85% of all tested tea samples do not meet TEEKANNE’s requirements for its tea brands. These strict requirements guarantee not only an optimal blend, but also a consistently high quality of enjoyment for our customers.
